Workplace noise assessments

Understand noise exposure during normal working tasks. We measure workplace noise and provide a clear report with recommendations to help you manage it.

When this may help

  • Noisy machinery, processes or working areas
  • An assessment requested by your insurer or health and safety adviser
  • Changes to equipment, shifts or workplace arrangements

What the work can include

  • Discuss the tasks, people and work patterns involved
  • Measure noise at relevant tasks and locations
  • Assess exposure patterns and peak noise where appropriate
  • Report the findings and recommend practical controls

Useful details for your enquiry

  • Your workplace location and main processes
  • The number of people affected and typical shift lengths
  • Any existing assessment or request from your adviser

START WITH YOUR BRIEF

Already have a planning condition or assessment request?

Tell us what it asks for. Our consultant will review the requirements before agreeing the survey scope.

Prepare for your survey

  • Prepare a list of the machines, tools and production processes, showing where they are and when they normally run.
  • Prepare a list of production staff by job role, work area and shift, with typical tasks and time spent on each. Use staff codes or first names where sufficient, and share any necessary personal details securely.
  • Arrange for representative production and relevant staff to be available; tell us in advance about shutdowns, maintenance or unusual work.
  • Confirm the site contact, access, induction, hazards and any existing assessment or hearing protection arrangements.

Please tell us before we travel if access, staff or operating conditions will not be ready. For distant visits we may travel the day before. We normally make no cancellation charge before setting off, but committed costs may still apply. Read our cancellation and preparation terms.

How we assess the noise

We assess the noise employees encounter during their normal work, explain the exposure results and recommend practical steps to reduce risk. The scope considers job roles, machinery, tasks, shift lengths and breaks.

Our workplace assessment approach follows the Control of Noise at Work Regulations 2005 and HSE noise guidance. We identify risks and recommend controls; the employer implements and maintains the required arrangements.

  • Agree which roles, activities and working patterns need to be represented. Similar jobs may be sampled where the consultant can justify that approach.
  • Use calibrated personal dosimeters where appropriate, supported by sound level measurements at relevant tasks, machines and workstations.
  • Assess daily noise exposure using measured sound levels and actual exposure durations, and consider peak sound pressure. Equivalent shifts can normally be represented by one shift where their tasks and noise are comparable; different patterns may need additional work.
  • Review existing controls and identify practical improvements to equipment, maintenance, layout, working methods and hearing protection arrangements.

What your report can include

  • The agreed scope, representative roles and tasks, survey conditions, equipment and calibration information.
  • Exposure and peak results, measurement and duration assumptions, and comparison with the relevant action and limit values.
  • A practical noise control action plan, with hearing protection selection and zones where required, training and health surveillance recommendations where appropriate.
  • Limitations, uncertainty and circumstances that should prompt a review, such as changes in machinery or working patterns.

Information that helps us quote

  • How many production staff work on each shift, and what job roles need to be covered?
  • Which machines, tools and tasks generate noise, and how long are they normally used?
  • What are the shift lengths and break arrangements, and do tasks or noise differ between shifts?
  • Is there an existing noise assessment, hearing protection information or a specific request from your adviser?

Noise at work

From £1,195.00 no VAT charged

Under 15 production staff on a representative shift

  • Example: more than 25 production staff per shift: £1,795.00 no VAT charged
  • Example: more than 45 production staff per shift: £2,495.00 no VAT charged

More than 75 production staff: bespoke quote. For 15–25 staff, please request a quote. Where shifts have equivalent processes and noise, we can normally measure one representative shift. Different work patterns may require additional work.

Final price depends on the agreed scope, access, monitoring and reporting requirements.
