Questions before you enquire?

Which assessment do I need?

Noise at work concerns employee exposure during working tasks. Environmental noise assessments consider the sound environment around a site. Noise impact assessments consider how an activity or proposal affects nearby noise-sensitive places. Send the planning condition or request so a consultant can confirm the scope.

Where do you work?

We conduct noise at work, environmental noise and noise impact assessments across England and Wales. This website does not offer surveys in Scotland or Ireland.

How much does it cost?

Current starting prices, where published, appear on the Pricing page. A quote depends on the site, measurement period, assessment and reporting requirements. The consultant confirms the final scope and price.

What information should I send?

Include the site address or postcode, the source of noise, the purpose of the assessment, normal operating hours, and your deadline. For planning work, include the exact planning condition or local authority request.

Can you promise planning approval?

A noise assessment provides evidence and recommendations. The local authority makes the planning decision. A consultant must review the project before agreeing the assessment approach.

What does a noise at work report cover?

We review representative roles, tasks and shifts, use personal dosimetry and task measurements where appropriate, assess daily exposure and peak sound, and recommend practical noise controls. The report explains the results, assumptions and hearing protection arrangements where required.

Is environmental noise the same as BS8233?

Environmental noise is the wider subject. BS8233 is commonly used when assessing noise affecting new homes or other accommodation. A residential assessment may consider daytime and night-time noise, maximum events, room layouts, glazing and ventilation. Share the planning condition so we can confirm the scope.

What does a BS4142 assessment involve?

We consider industrial or commercial sound at nearby homes, including the existing background sound, measured or predicted source sound, operating patterns and sound characteristics. The report considers context, uncertainty and practical mitigation. Proposed plant may need manufacturer sound data and drawings.

How long does monitoring take?

The consultant selects representative periods for the project. Night-time or weekend conditions, different work patterns, multiple sources or several measurement positions can affect the survey and reporting time. We confirm the scope before quoting.

Can one survey cover more than one requirement?

Sometimes. A project may need both an assessment of noise affecting new accommodation and an assessment of new plant affecting neighbours. Send all planning conditions or requests so we can agree what is needed.

Is hearing protection enough on its own?

HSE guidance gives priority to eliminating noise risk at source or reducing it through suitable controls. Hearing protection is part of the arrangements where needed; it does not replace practical noise control. Our report identifies recommendations for the employer to implement.

Does a workplace assessment expire after one year?

The assessment should be reviewed regularly and when work changes significantly or there is reason to doubt its validity. The Regulations do not prescribe an annual resurvey for every workplace. Changes to machines, tasks, exposure or controls may require reassessment.
