Key Questions to ask a
noise surveyor before you take them on.

  1. Question: Does you have the appropriate qualifications and experience for the task we need?
Answer: Your surveyor should have the following minimum qualifications and be able to show you copies of them on request: Minimum: "Diploma in Environmental Acoustics and Engineering Noise Control", higher qualifications in this field are obviously more desirable. In terms of experience, the more proven work experience in the offered services the better. Do not hesitate to ask for examples of relevant work experience.

  2. Question: Do you carry out noise measurements for the full required duration of a test and are you in attendance at all times during the test measurements?
Answer: For total accuracy your surveyor should be in attendance at all times during a test and not leave their equipment unattended for periods during the test as any variances cannot then be accurately accounted for. Furthermore tests should be carried out for their full duration and not simply extrapolated from a shorter period of testing. Whilst this may not necessarilly affect the results it could result in the findings being rejected in the event of a legal dispute should one ever arise. All our tests are carried out in full and are attended at all times to give you total confidence in the results even in the case of a legal dispute arising.

  3. Question: Is your monitoring equipment calibrated every two years by the appropriate calibrating body?
Answer: A noise surveyor's monitoring equipment must be callibrated every two years by an independent calibration laboratory to ensure their total accuracy. Never use a surveyor who cannot show you an in-date calibration valid certificate for the equipment they are proposing to use.

  4. Question: Do you carry suitable liability insurance for the task we need?
Answer: A reputable surveyor will have liability insurance suitable for the jobs they are carrying out. CEA carry £2 million of professional indemnity insurance and £5 million of public liability insurance to give you complete peace of mind.

  5. Question: Will you be prepared to stand by your survey findings and act as our representative in the event of a dispute arising?
Answer: Your surveyor should be totally confident of the accuracy and methodology of their findings. They should be able to articulate these to any other party in the event of a dispute arising. They should have total confidence that any independent re-testing under the same conditions will produce effectively the same results as those originally obtained by them.

CEA can answer YES to all the questions above that you should ask any noise surveyor before using their services
